Japan Diaries #1: The Journey

Back by popular demand - this is a re-post of the travel diary of our recent trip to Osaka, Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Nagano.

A few days ago we literally jumped out of bed, cleaned the dishes and climbed in the car.  We were on our way to Japan.  Some long-abandoned plans had led to unused tickets.  They were set to expire so we were simply forced to go on an adventure.

It was a long trip though.  We don't live anywhere near an airport for one.  For another, we had to pass through Hawaii rather than take the much faster polar route.  When we left the house it was 10 AM on the 3rd.  We finally arrived at our first Japanese hotel after 7 PM on the 6th (the international date line adds one day to the calendar).

Seventeen hours from LAX to Osaka-Kansai
5 1/2 hours to Honolulu, then a 3 hour wait, then 8 1/2 loooooong hours to Osaka.  Immigration and Customs were fairly easy... then the long awaited hotel.  It was 3 AM on our body clocks by this time, so we opted for a stay at the in-airport hotel and a trip to a simple noodle shop.  Mmmmm.  My Japanese favorite has to be a plain old bowl of noodles with some spring onions as garnish.

These letters are visible across from the airport structure looking towards the runway across the bay.  I have no idea what they say but it is pretty.

Tomorrow we head Northeast to Tokyo.
